Newsletter (January 2023)

Welcome to our latest newsletter. In this edition, we are highlighting the recent updates on Jordan's Principle in the news.

As you may know, Jordan's Principle is a legal principle that ensures First Nations children have access to the same services and supports as all other children in Canada. The principle is named in honor of Jordan River Anderson, a young boy from Norway House Cree Nation who tragically passed away after a lengthy legal battle for access to medical care.

Recent updates have highlighted some important developments in the implementation of Jordan's Principle:

Expansion of Jordan's Principle: In November 2021, the Government of Canada announced the expansion of Jordan's Principle to include non-status and Métis children. This expansion ensures that all First Nations, Inuit, and Métis children have access to the same services and supports as all other children in Canada.

Funding increase: In December 2021, the Government of Canada announced an additional $1.2 billion in funding over five years for Jordan's Principle. This funding will help to address the ongoing gaps in services and supports for Indigenous children with special needs.

New online portal: The Government of Canada has also launched a new online portal that makes it easier for families and service providers to access Jordan's Principle services. The portal provides a streamlined application process and access to a range of supports, including medical equipment, therapies, and mental health services.

At Four Directions Autism, we are committed to ensuring that Indigenous children with special needs and developmental disabilities have access to the services and supports they need. We are pleased to see the recent developments in the implementation of Jordan's Principle, and we will continue to work with families and service providers to ensure that Indigenous children have equal access to health and medical services.

Thank you for your continued support, and we wish you a happy and healthy new year.

Sincerely,

The Four Directions Autism Team.
